Coping With Losing a Pet

If you have just lost a pet, either it disappeared or passed away, I feel your pain. I have lost a pet before and today someone very close to me lost his pet. When you are in this position, it is really tough especially if you are close to your pet. Grieve all you want and cry if you need to. It is understandable. When people who do not have pets hear about the loss of a pet, they usually do not understand the pain as much. I was like that too until I had pets, then, I understood. If you have a special bond with that pet, it is even harder. This pet is not directly mine but I play with it regularly. It is pretty new, we got it just less than a month ago. It recently learned new tricks and become really interactive with us and suddenly it disappeared. Nobody realised that the door was left slightly open. And that is how it disappeared. We are not sure if it is gone completely,  but we will attempt to find it.

Here I will share some ways when coping with losing a pet. Hopefully, you will find some of this useful:

  • First of all, stay calm and relax. If you are stressed out, it can be hard to think straight.
  • If a pet of yours passed away and you are devastated, allow yourself to grieve as much as you need to.
  • If a pet of yours disappeared, think of all the possible scenarios and search thoroughly. If it is applicable, put up signs and 'pet missing' notices.
  • Do not give up hope easily.
  • Try your best and do what you can to honour your lost pet.
  • Realise you have been a great carer, you have done your best.
  • When something is lost, sometimes it is meant to be. Your pet has reached its time to depart so be happy that it is in a better place. If it lost, hopefully, someone kind has found it and it caring well for it.
  • If its meant to be, you will find your pet again. If not, you can get a new pet. It will not be the same as your lost pet but it will have its own unique personality that you will learn to love.
  • Stay positive. Accept the fact that the past is the past and look forward to the future.
  • Acknowledge yourself for caring for your pet, you have done a great job.
  • Cherish the good memories, the photos and videos you have taken.
  • Be thankful for the pets or what you have at present.
  • Learn from the situation on how you can improve caring for your pets in the future.
  • When anything is lost, I understand that feeling when you strongly wish you could do something or have a device that can track where it went or what happened to it. Speaking of device, for cats and dogs, there is special tracking device that you can for your pet. If anything happens, it will definitely make things easier for both you and your pet.
  • Finally, forgive yourself. As much as pet-owners like to blame themselves for the loss of their pet, be forgiving and accepting of the situation. It will be slightly hard the first few days but then the simple things in life and the other pets & people around you will definitely bring joy to your day. Nothing will be the same without your pet but trust that your pet will always be there in your heart loving you eternally.

  1. My dog got fought with a cobra in my backyard. She was loyal to us till the very end even when she suffered a great deal from the fight. It was in November. The sad thing was that I was not able to pay my final respect to her. 😭
